Catching Up With SAil Training International’s Communications Officer
Our Communications Officer, Harry Allaway, is currently sailing on board Wylde Swan (The Netherlands), as part of Race 2 of the Rendez-Vous 2017 Tall Ships Regatta across the Atlantic. Yesterday (Monday 15 May), he gave us this fantastic update about life on board:
“Life is never boring as a Tall Ships Race Communications Officer. For example, take the last day. During the evening, before the sun set, and acting as a member of Wylde Swan crew, I took the helm as we gybed the flying swan to head further south to catch a bit more of the trade winds. Then to bed… only to discover the bunk had collapsed. The slats had come away and I was now sleeping at an awkward angle. The up side of this was that I didn’t have to brace myself to stop falling out of the bunk.
“Daylight came and the cool of the morning was enjoyed before going back into what I have nicknamed as the ‘Sauna.’ A room set aside for the crew, which they do not use because of the heat.
“Today, Monday 15 May, is Fosse, the captain of Wylde Swan‘s, birthday. So, celebrations all round. Also, the cook is taking a short break, so the 2nd mate is cooking pancakes. Either plain or with bacon and other bits thrown in.
“As far as the racing goes, the afterguard on board the Swan are busy working on the tactics. Do they go west, or travel a little further south for more of the trade winds? I think they may maintain the course just south of west to try to stay ahead of Blue Clipper on the water. The next few days will tell. All fingers are crossed to get ahead of Blue Clipper on corrected time.
“The Wylde Swan is a very happy ship. Music and laughter all the time, which is combined with concentration on the sails and helm. Our speed is currently eight knots in a WSW direction.
“I must get out of this sauna for a while, so I will sign off. This is Race Control, OUT.”
Harry Allaway, Sail Training International Communications Officer
We’re also excited to announce an interesting challenge… a bake off competition for the crews and trainees taking part in Race 2!
“To all Captains,
“The STI team is well aware of the Communications Officer’s liking of CAKE.
“You are therefore challenged to bake a cake to be presented on arrival in St Georges, Bermuda, for judging. The criteria and therefore judging of the cake will be based on nationality, taste, presentation, and the equipment available on board.
“Good baking.”
We can’t wait to catch up with the crews in Bermuda and taste their creations!
