Biography
The Caravel ‘Vera Cruz’, the third built by APORVELA on the original Project of the Shipwright Alm Rogerio de Oliveira was aimed to substitute the previous Boa Esperanca which, during the twelve years of service on Sail Training for the trainees of APORVELA, sailed over 60,000 miles on the Atlantic and Mediterranean, visiting ports in Northern Europe, Southern Europe, Morocco and the Caribbean and USA, allowing hundreds of young and not so young trainees to have their baptism on the sea and their apprenticeship on sailing.
The Caravels were the special ships developed and used by Prince Henry to explore the Atlantic Ocean and the Occidental Coast of Africa in search of a maritime way to reach India.
The Vera Cruz although maintaining the general appearance of their ancestors, as shown in illuminated maps and paintings, has been adapted to provide a minimum level of comfort to crews, carries inside all the modern commodities for storing, cooking and hygienic needs and has all the necessary and mandatory safety and navigational equipment.
