Jan van der Burg has had a long career in the Netherlands Navy and held various seagoing commands. His final posting, as vice-admiral, was at the Ministry of Defence where he carried the responsibility for a major IT program until its satisfactory conclusion in 2014.
With a personal motto of ‘always brace for change’, his skills include policy development and governance, project management and financial planning and control. Following retirement, Jan was active as consultant with the private and public sectors. He chaired the Sail Den Helder committee which oversaw a successful port event in 2017. Since 2018 he serves Sail Training International as voluntary board member of the trading company. As such, he provides management advice and support to the CEO and permanent staff. He became chairman of the board as per August 2024. His hobbies include golf, alpine hiking and scuba diving.
