The Tall Ships Races Aalesund: race results and prizes
Fryderyck Chopin (Poland) was first overall (on corrected time) in the first race leg of The Tall Ships Races 2015 – as announced today (Thursday 16 July) at a colourful and exciting prize giving ceremony in Aalesund, Norway.
The announced results and other prizes followed a high energy crew parade through the cobbled streets of Aalesund, famous for its wonderful art nouveau architecture. Earlier in the day the crews enjoyed sports activities and excursions and last night the Captains were treated to local cuisine at the traditional Captain’s Dinner.
Captain Calvin Whitehand, Black Diamond of Durham (UK) said at the event, “The last time the Tall Ships Races visited Aalesund in 2001 I was a trainee and I remember how welcome the port of Aalesund made us all feel. Now I am back with my own crew and vessel and once again we have all experienced a warm and loving welcome after what was a challenging race from Belfast.
“I have been taking part in The Tall Ships Races now for 16 years and, when asked why, I tell people that it’s all about the trainees. To see a young person join the ship feeling a little anxious, not knowing anyone and later leaving with life skills and friends for life is what sail training is all about and I am proud to offer youngsters that opportunity.”

There were three vessels with ten different nationalities on board, but the winner had more from outside Europe: Canada, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Guinea New Zealand, Poland, UK, USA and Norway.

Best dressed crew in parade (Class A) – Morgenster (The Netherlands)
Cook longest at sea – Europa (The Netherlands)
Youngest crew – Filou (Poland)
Average age 23.1 years.
Special award – Rupel (Belgium)
Awarded for professional seamanship during the race.
Communications award – De Gallant (The Netherlands)
Awarded for best daily communications during the race
