Sunshine on sails for the Parade of Sail in Aarhus, Denmark
The sun shone brightly on the world’s international fleet of Tall Ships, as thrilled crowds of onlookers watched the dramatic Parade of Sail in Aarhus, Denmark.
Over one hundred ships sailed together in a dramatic celebration of the start of The Tall Ships Races 2013, before leaving for the eagerly awaited race start in Copenhagen on Tuesday 9 July.
Each ship, many dressed in colourful flags, displayed its unique personality at sea, from playing its national anthem and favourite rock music, to mexican waves, drumming and gun fire.
The first port of Aarhus had organised a wonderful event for the 500,000 estimated visitors with music stages, rousing shanty singing, a Viking village and fun activities for the whole family. Joining the crowd were thousands of young trainees, aged 16-25 years old, who are sailing the ships – many experiencing their first time at sea.
Christer Samuelsson, Event Chairman said, “It is always sad to leave a port, particularly when everyone has had such a terrific welcome and already made many new friends. But The Tall Ships Races 2013 now has an exciting mission – to race each other to the next port in Helsinki, where the international party will be continued.”
