Garibaldi Tall Ships Regatta – Race Update 4
The Italian Class B vessel, Pandora (pictured), is now in the lead of the Garibaldi Tall Ships Regatta overall on corrected time at the 0600hrs GMT report. Behind her overall is the Austrian registered vessel Woj, with the Russian Akela in third place overall.
In Class A, Astrid (Netherlands) remains in the lead, with Oosterschelde (Netherlands) in second and Tenacious (UK) in third. In Class B, behind the leading Pandora is Far Barcelona (Spain), with Tecla (Netherlands) now in third place.
The Class C/Ds are being led by Woj with just four young people on board, Akela is now in second with Pamadica (Italy) in third.
On the water, Hansa (Spain) has extended her lead with just 148 miles to go to the finish line. Orsa Maggiore (Italy) is very close and behind these two Akela and Pamadica are keeping pace but unlikely to catch up.
The conditions for the fleet are not good as they are experiencing an oily flat calm with no wind. The forecast is for very light winds from variable directions over the next two to three days. The Race Committee has therefore decided that it is impossible to keep the race going and have brought the time limit forward to 0900 hrs GMT today 14 April. This will give the fleet sufficient time to start their engines and motor down to Trapani to arrive in time for the festivities which begin on Friday 16 April.
