The Final Celebrations Begin in Stunning Arendal
After 35 days and over 1,000 miles of sailing, The Tall Ships Races 2023 began its final Host Port celebrations today in Arendal, Norway…
From early morning the historic Norwegian town was buzzing with excitement as the ships continued their arrivals. Flanked by local yachts on their approaches to the picturesque harbour, the Tall Ships fleet helped transform the heart of the city centre for four days of maritime celebrations.
As the harbour filled with visitors eager to see the ships up-close throughout the day, the Opening Ceremony marked the official start the celebrations.
Race Chair, Bjorg Johnsrud Western, welcomed visitors to the event and highlighted the main aim of youth development that is at the core of the event.
“Mayor – Harbour master – Captains, ladies and gentlemen. Kjære Arendalitter! Congratulations on your 300 years anniversary and thank-you for hosting The Tall Ships Races!
I am happy and proud to be here in Arendal representing Sail Training International which organize The Tall Ships Races. For me it has been great to see that the citicens of Arendal are proud of their city. You are keeping up your maritime history and looking into the future by being a part of the Tall Ships Races family.
In earlier days the life on board could be dangerous. From 1850 – 1875 3000 Norwegian ships sunk, many of them from Arendal.
To be on board today is safe, but not a romantic walk in the park. It is hard work, often in bad weather, wet and cold. There are waves that can make you sea sick – or wind that does not bring you forward. No mobile or internet network.
You discover that you have hidden strengths and talents, you see the value of working in a team and the value of friendship. You often discover that you have increased confidence and trust in yourself and other people and you acquire life skills which will help you live a more fulfilled life, and most importantly… you learn that you can do it!”
Having regained their land legs, the crews who raced from Lerwick can now enjoy an amazing schedule of activities. The program includes a sailing regatta, swimming, volleyball, pilates, and beach volleyball, as well as cultural tours. These will all offer an excellent chance for trainees to connect, exchange their stories, and share their unique experiences during the journey.
About The Tall Ships Races 2023
The Tall Ships Races 2023 will see the international fleet of Tall Ships and Small Ships return to Den Helder, Hartlepool, Fredrikstad, Lerwick and Arendal from 29 June to 6 August.
With four of the five Host Ports having already hosted the stunning Tall Ships fleet, we are excited to return to old friends and visit new frontiers for some exhilarating sailing, stunning cruises and celebrations across Northwest Europe.
As with every edition of The Tall Ships Races, the series will offer a range of sailing experiences for trainees and crews. The Race Committee will look at waypoint options to provide shorter and longer races for the fleet that will require a mixture of tactical skill and exhilarating speed to conquer.
