Announcing The Tall Ships Races Magellan-Elcano
The Tall Ships Races are set to return to the Channel and Iberian Peninsula for the first time in seven years in 2023, with The Tall Ships Races Magellan-Elcano taking place from 15 August-10 September 2023.
The races will start in Falmouth, UK (15-18 August), and follow a racecourse to A Coruña, Spain (24-27 August), Lisbon, Portugal (31 August-3 September), and Cádiz, Spain (7-10 September).
The Tall Ships Races Magellan-Elcano will follow on from The Tall Ships Races 2023 (29 June-6 August) and will help to provide an action-packed summer of Tall Ships and Sail Training Events for the world-famous fleet, participating trainees and crews, and spectators across Europe.
The Tall Ships Races Magellan Elcano series will celebrate the first circumnavigation of the world by Ferdinand Magellan and Sebastián Elcano over 500 years ago. The landmark expedition is one of the most important journeys undertaken in the history of maritime navigation and epitomises the unique and impactful experience of The Tall Ships Races.
Tall Ships Races Chief Executive Officer, Alan James, welcomed the return of the races:
“Following the heart-breaking cancellations of this event in 2020 and then again in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we cannot wait to bring the unique spectacle and majesty of The Tall Ships Races back to Southern Europe.
“Our previous visits to Falmouth, A Coruña, Lisbon and Cádiz have all provided spectacular celebrations for The Tall Ships Races and I am sure 2023 will be no different. Everyone is confident these ports will embrace the International Tall Ships fleet, with their commitment to youth development and strong maritime legacies which reflect our core values of international friendship and understanding.”
The Race Committee has looked at options which deliver one short and one longer race leg and a scenic Cruise-in-Company along a charming coast. The race series will offer trainees an opportunity to participate in a variety of sail training experiences along with enticing options for international vessel operators to build a strong base for trainee recruitment.
The variety of festivities, attractions and crew activities during Europe’s largest, free, family festival, are sure to make the event a truly unforgettable experience.
The Tall Ships Races always provide the perfect opportunity to take part in some great sailing and embark on the adventure of a lifetime at sea. They bring together people of different nationalities, religions and cultures and visit a range of ports around Europe, promoting international friendship and understanding.
