Race Report 4: Epic Sailing for Some but the Doldrums at the Back of the Fleet

Posted on: 16.07.16

Ocean Spirit of Moray (UK), Mir (Russia) and Dar Mlodziezy (Poland) continue their charge at the head of the fleet and are sailing in exciting conditions reaching speeds in excess of 12 knots at times.

In marked contrast, those vessels at the back of the fleet are frustrated in doldrums like conditions and there have been a few recent retirements as some Captains decide to motorsail south out of the area of no wind to ensure that they will reach Lisbon by the 22nd July.

The winds are forecast to generally increase across the Bay of Biscay promising better racing conditions for all the but longer-term forecast gives lighter and more fluky conditions past Cape Finisterre (NW Spain) which could slow the front-runners up and open up chances for those vessels behind them. With well over 300 nautical miles to the finish line of The Tall Ships Races 2016 race one, there is all to play for.
