A Parade to Remember for Mariehamn as the fleet departs for Race Three

After four activity and fun packed days in Mariehamn it is time to go back to sea and the fleet spent the morning preparing to undock, parade out of port and proceed towards the start area for Race Three of this Tall Ships Races series, to Szczecin in Poland.

This afternoon the marina, port and all open spaces along the water’s edge, as well as on various islands dotted around the archipelago, were filled with people enjoying themselves while watching the ships depart in a procession that lasted some two hours or more.  Many memories made and hopefully children inspired to sail on the ships themselves when they get older.

For safety and weather reasons, the race start is now a virtual start 25 miles east of Sandhamn (Sweden) at coordinates provided to the Captains and the virtual start line will be open from 03.00 UTC (06.00 local time) on Sunday with ships having two hours to cross the line.

Make sure you follow the fleet on YB to see who is faring best in the conditions and also follow the ‘race within a race’ as two sister ships, Pogoria and Iskra Orp compete for line honours.
