Wonderful Experience on Maybe
Jessica Sherlock has only sailed once before joining Maybe in Varna and that was on the Russian ship Mir. Back in 2003, Jessica joined her father to take part in The Tall Ships Races from Riga to Lubeck and enjoyed the experience so much that she decided she’d like to do another race.
“This time I thought it would be good to join a British ship and Maybe looked nice and friendly,” said Jessica who selected the route from Varna to Lavrion because it included visiting such interesting destinations as Bulgaria, the Black Sea and of course Istanbul. Jessica didn’t manage to persuade any of her friends to come with her on the voyage but her boyfriend did join her in Istanbul for a spot of sightseeing.
“I’ve learnt a lot of this trip, especially all the terminology and names of everything so I feel a bit more competent than I did before,” said Jessica. “I really wanted to be on a ship where I could get more involved in the sailing and that is certainly true on Maybe!” According to mate Louise Ruffel, Jessica has now become a first class helmsman!
Unfortunately for Jessica she did get a little seasick on the voyage down from Istanbul when there was a storm but despite that she says she would definitely love to take part in another Tall Ships event. “The best part about the whole trip was simply the experience of it all,” said Jessica. “I think there are lots of people who would love to take part in these events but they just don’t know that they can,” commented Jessica, “I will certainly be telling all my friends about what fun it is and hopefully encourage some to try it for themselves.”
Jessica manages the climate change policy for a London local authority and has to be back at work on Monday which means she has to leave on Saturday. She says she is not looking forward to leaving her new friends on Maybe, and is sad that she will miss the crew parade and prize giving.
