Sports, experiences, adventure … and a rescued pigeon

July 14, 2014

A packed programe of sports and activities has kept 2000 trainees and many thousands of visitors in Fredrikstad, Norway happy and entertained in the second port of The Tall Ships Races 2014.

Now, many trainees who took part in the first race have packed their bags to leave and new trainees are arriving to embark on the next stage of The Tall Ships adventure – a Cruise in Company to Bergen, Norway – the third port of Europe’ largest, free, family festival.

Hear what three trainees thought of their Tall Ships race from Harlingen, Netherlands to Fredrikstad, Norway – Eline Bredal Kristiansen (18) from Sorlandet (Norway); Rowan Dolnan (19) from Leader (UK) and Anna Wall (19) from Tenacious (UK) tell their stories on YouTube and Facebook

Football party

Yesterday ended with an outdoor/indoor crew party, with a football twist, with a large screen set up for everyone to enjoy the FIFA world cup – before dodging raindrops and heading indoors to dance the night away. And a little known fact is that party attendees between them managed to eat 240 kilos of bananas!!

Crew sports

Wylde Swann (Netherlands) won the crew sports challenge between 48 international teams – and which ended in everyone jumping into the sea off the island of Isegran.

Captains briefing

All Captains of the fleet attended a briefing this afternoon (Monday 14 July) to help them prepare for the Cruise in Company to Bergen, Norway – leaving tomorrow afternoon.

Seven Norweigan ports have prepared to greet the fleet during the cruise – Kragers, Arendal, Kristiansand, Skudeneshavn, Leirvik, Bekkjarvik and Stusshamn.  Each is offering a full programmes of activities for the crews, as well as much needed hot showers, laundry, site seeing, shopping and entertainment.

And finally … pigeon post

Politechnika (Poland) picked up an exhausted carrier pigeon during its race to Fredrikstad. They built a box for it and kept it happy with food and water – but then didn’t know what to do.  They managed to trace the owner – who bizarrely lived in Poland – who said the pigeon would be so disorientated by its sail training adventures on a Tall Ship, it wouldn’t be able to find its own way home.   So – they are having to post it.   See the fully story and photos on Facebook.
