Caravela Vera Cruz of APORVELA, Portugal’ National Sail Training Operator and Creoula of the Portuguese Navy are both sailing towards Madeira and the Selvagens Islands to participate in a major scientific expedition called ‘M@rbis Selvagens 2010’.
The objectives of this mission are to carry out a thorough survey of the fauna, marine flora and habitats from 70m of altitude until 2000m of depth near these islands which are located about 160 miles south from Madeira.
Vera Cruz and Creoula will transport the majority of the 70 scientists involved in this project and will return to Lisbon on the 6th of July. Vera Cruz will also provide sail training for several students and teachers from all over Portugal who have won prizes for school activities regarding the sea.
Vera Cruz is a replica of the 15th century Portuguese ships that sailed the Atlantic Ocean and APORVELA uses the vessel for sail training and school visits. Creoula is four masted schooner, formerly a fishing ship.
