SCF Black Sea Tall Ships Regatta: Day Two

September 17, 2016

With all of the Class A and B fleet now alongside in Novorossiysk, the quaysides were buzzing with families all day today. The dramatic mountain scenery that surrounds the port made a fantastic backdrop for the ships, all adorned with colourful flags and bunting.

Party time, on and off ship

This evening the crew party will take place on the quayside, but five crew members from Pogoria will not be able to be there, due to some visa issues restricting movement off the ship. To make sure they didn’t feel left out, a special visit was made by the Sail Training International race team, who delivered pizza, cakes and drinks to help them have their own party on board. Pictured are Agnieszka Wojtkowiak, Daniel Browowski, Wiktoria Bandura and Julia Debicka enjoying their surprise.

School at Sea

Pogoria is a 45m barquentine, built in 1980, often run as a school under sail. Students wishing to become trainees on board prove their long term commitment to charity by volunteering for a year before attending a selection weekend. Those subsequently chosen enjoy a six or eight week sailing programme, including sailing instruction, regular school classes and mentoring/coaching to achieve their upmost potential.

Behind the sails: So what do the trainees eat on board?

We asked four trainees what they ate for dinner yesterday. This is what they told us….

Eugeniy, Kruzenshtern: Rabbit, Salad, Spaghetti

Clara, Pogoria: Bread, vegetables, tea, jam, sausages (probably not in that order!)

Dmitr, Kaliakra: Chicken, fruit, dessert

Victor, Adornate: Chicken with pepper, potatoes, beans, apple pie, ice cream and sandwiches!
