Russian crews dominate sports events
Day three of the Barcelona leg of the Regatta started today with more sports competitions – something to get the trainees up and moving again after last night’s crew party! This time it was basketball and rowing.
Rowing took place in the bay close to the Regatta fleet and involved teams of three in a Currach – a wooden framed boat over which animal skins or hides were once stretched, though now made from canvas. These boats were used for fishing, ferrying and for the transport of goods and livestock.
The rowing technique requires the three rowers to row together in perfect time – some crews managed this better than others!
Results:
Rowing – 1st Kruzenshtern (Russia), 2nd Patriarc’h (France), 3rd La Grace (Czech Republic)
Basketball – 1st Mir (Russia), 2nd Kruzenshtern (Russia), 3rd La Grace (Czech Republic)
Many ships have new crews arriving today in readiness for the start of the race tomorrow (Tuesday). Others are open to the public and have queues of enthusiastic visitors waiting to board.

What is sail training?
Sail Training is an adventure activity, which includes far more than sailing instruction. Participants are required to confront demanding challenges, both physical and emotional. It is an activity that inspires self-confidence and personal responsibility. It promotes an acceptance of others, whatever their social or cultural backgrounds, and develops a willingness to take controlled risks. Those who undertake Sail Training on Tall Ships generally find it a positive life-changing experience.
