December 13, 2010

Volunteers Fred Platt, Roz Harper, Jenny Thompson and Ali Findlay with the award

Today the Rona Sailing Project were presented with their award for Sail Training Organisation of the Year for Small Vessels in a special presentation on board the newest addition to their fleet Merrilyn

The Sail Training International Annual Awards are presented at the International Sail Training and Tall Ships Conference, which this year took place in Stavanger but unfortunately, representatives of the Rona Sailing Project were unable to attend.

Every year Sail Training International looks at organisations throughout

the world and makes two awards for excellence in innovation and best

practice in sail training for for young people. The Rona Sailing Project operates three 18 to 22 metre purpose built sail training Bermudan ketches and one smaller yacht for volunteer training that take around 1,000 people to sea each year. Their focus is on providing 7-day voyages at a subsidised cost of Σ180 making it one of the most affordable and accessible sail training organisations in our community.

The award was presented by John Lang and Gwyn Brown, Commercial Director, Sail Training International to a group of young sail training volunteers from the charity (pictured).

A regular participant in The Tall Ships Races its 400 volunteers have put together no less than five trans-Atlantic Tall Ships Race campaigns during its long history. It also runs special voyages for the visually and hearing impaired and for those with severe learning difficulties. The award is extra fitting because the charity has celebrated its 50th anniversary this year.

Congratulations to all at the Rona Sailing Project on this well deserved award!
