Race two, report one: close competition in all classes

The second race leg of The Tall Ships Races 2014 is well underway from Bergen, Norway to Esbjerg, Denmark – and there are early predictions of close competition in all classes.

The first interim position report shows:

Paul Bishop, Race Director, Sail Training International said äóìThose vessels that did well at rounding the way point to the north of the start line have extended their lead as they head back south towards Esbjerg. Gulden Leeuw is leading the Class A ships on the water but is being chased closely by Eendracht, Morgenster, Christian Radich, Fryderyk Chopin and Statsraad Lehmkuhl who are closing the gap. Christian Radich is the most westerly Class A ship and we could see this strategy paying off later today.

“Tomidi leads the fleet on the water for Class D, with Gigi, Spaniel, Esprit and Antwerp Flyer all close behind. Having lost out in the fight for line honours in Race one to Gigi, Tomidi will be racing hard to keep her lead. Race two is going to see close competition in all classes all the way up to the finish line.

“The wind is forecast to gradually increase from the west giving all vessels favourable sailing conditions until Thursday when it is due to back to the south west and then south, which is likely to slow down the traditional vessels that are not so efficient at sailing into the wind.”
