Race Two, Report Five: Two vessels passed Waypoint 1

May 21, 2014

At the time of this morning’s communication schedule, current positions are as follows:

Class A – on corrected time

1st Royal Helena (Bulgaria)

2nd Nadezhda (Russia)

3rd Mir (Russia)

Class B – on corrected time

1st Johanna Lucretia (UK) and also 2nd overall

2nd Bodrum (Turkey)

3rd Adornate (Romania) – pictured crossing the start line

Class C – on corrected time

1st Akela (Russia) and also 1st overall

2nd  Sea Adventure (Bulgaria)

The fleet is well spread across the Black Sea, with Akela having some 120 miles to go and Sedov (Russia) having 355 miles to go.  Two vessels have passed Waypoint 1, south of the Crimean Peninsula – Akela and Sea Adventure.

For those vessels approaching Waypoint 1, there is some easterly wind between 10 and 15 knots for the next six hours.  This should help them get up to and passed the waypoint.  Meanwhile Class A ships, Kaliakra (Bulgaria), Mercia (Romania) and Sedov, who are all much further south, may find it difficult to get up to the waypoint as they have much less wind in their vicinity.

Those approaching the waypoint will find a more favourable wind pattern once passed, which should speed their way to Constanta.

Sail Training is an adventure activity, which includes far more than sailing instruction. Participants are required to confront demanding challenges, both physical and emotional. It is an activity that inspires self-confidence and personal responsibility. It promotes an acceptance of others, whatever their social or cultural backgrounds, and develops a willingness to take controlled risks.
