Race Two, Report Five

Due to the light and variable winds conditions and the distance some of the fleet are still from La Spezia, the race will now have a finish at sea at 22.00hrs UTC (midnight local).  This will enable those ships still some 100 nm away to motor to La Spezia in time for the fesitval.  

Only a small number of ships have crossed the finish line, including first across the line Stella Polare (Italy) closely followed by Akela (Russia).  Mir (Russia) was the first Class A ship to cross the line.  It is hoped that some others will cross line before the new time limit.   Despite the challenging conditions, some ships have cleverly picked up the wind effect from the land which has enabled them to make some progress.   

Three Italian ships have made their way into port today.  Amerigo Vespucci – pictured – made a grand entrance this afternoon, followed by Nave Italia and Nave Palinuro who are both joining the fleet in port. Adornate (Romania) also arrived this evening.  The majority of ships will arrive during tomorrow (Thursday) and the remainder by noon on Friday.

La Spezia is looking forward to putting on an impressive show.  The berthing arrangements are going to provide a wonderful spectacle with all 31 ships within 470m of each other because of the extra pontoons and piers that have been put in.
