Race One, Report Two: Exciting battles at sea for line honours

May 4, 2014

All vessels continue to race and have all reported their positions to the communications vessel.

Positions (all on corrected time) are as follows:

Class A

1st  Nadezhda (Russia)

2nd  Mir (Russia)

3rd  Royal Helena (Bulgaria)

Class B – no change to this morning’s positions

1st  Bodrum (Turkey)

2nd  Adornate (Romania)

3rd  Johanna Lucretia (UK)

Class C/D – this class is combined due to the number of vessels entered in those classes.

1st  Sea Adventure (Bulgaria)

2nd Akela (Russia)

3rd  Viking (Russia)

There are several exciting battles taking place within the fleet – Sea Adventure (currently 1st on the water), Bodrum and Viking have all taken a northerly route and are challenging each other for line honours.  Taking a similar route but further back are Nadezhda (currently 4th overall) and Mir (currently 5th overall), who will be using their skills to benefit from every breath of wind.

The wind failed to increase as expected today  – at the time of reporting it was ESE 5-7 knots with a moderate sea state, however it is expected to veer through south and then northwards and increase to between 15 and 20 knots during the next 24 hours.

Twenty-nine sail training vessels entered the SCF Black Sea Tall Ships Regatta, with 17 having arrived in Varna to take part, including one Ukranian and seven Russian ships.  Most of them are racing from Varna (Bulgaria) to Novorossiysk (Russia) before cruising to Sochi (Russia), from where they will race the final leg to Constanta (Romania).
