Race Finally Gets Under Way

After several postponements, Race One of The Tall Ships Races 2010 finally got underway at 17.30 hrs UTC/GMT on 14 July, with the Class A ships making slow progress in the light south-easterly winds. The heavy rain clouds that had hampered the start finally cleared away leaving a lovely sunny evening. 

Some ships crossed the line early but Alexander von Humboldt (Germany) (pic) was officially the first across the line, followed by Pelican of London (UK) and Tenacious (UK) on exactly the same time. Provident (UK) was the first Class B vessel over the line, followed by Constantia (Sweden) and Utopia (Denmark). 

Zenobe Gramme (Belgium) and Miles to Go (Belgium) were first across the line in Class C and D respectively.

All vessels are now headed for waypoint one, 26 miles from the start, where they should pick up stronger winds as they head off towards Aalborg in Denmark, the next port of call.

At 19.30 hrs UTC/GMT, Class A vessels were sailing at over 5 knots and Class B vessels over 6 knots.
