Race 3 Gets Underway

June 1, 2010

Race 3 of the Historical Seas Tall Ships Regatta got under way this morning. The majority of the 18 vessels in the fleet crossed the start line within the first hour of the possible two hour start gate of 0500 – 0700 UTC/GMT. The only vessel not to cross the start line was Christianna V (Greece) who will not be taking part in the race but will be making her way to Lavrion.

First to start was Ideefixe (France) at 0507 with Mythos (Greece) second at 0509 and Glaros K (Greece) third at 0512. The first Class A to cross the line was Shabab Oman (pictured) at 0520 with Alexander von Humboldt (Germany) next at 0527, followed by Dar Mlodziezy (Poland) at 0528. The last vessel to cross the start line was Dewaruci (Indonesia) at 0638.

Wind at the start was SSW 5-10kts but strengthened and backed to the east of south about 30 minutes after the opening of the start gate, which will considerably help the fleet head towards the first waypoint.

From the start line, the race route requires the fleet to leave Agios Evstratios to port (waypoint 1) and then down to Tragonisi Island (waypoint 2, southeast of Mikonos) which they leave to starboard. The finish line is off the southern tip of Nisos Kí©a.
