Light start expected for Parade of Sail

The success of the opening event of the Historical Seas Tall Ships Regatta has exceeded all expectations, with an estimated 200,000 visiting the beautiful city of Volos over the last five days.

The Tall Ships fleet moored in the port of Volos and along the picturesque Riviera has attracted visitors from not only all over Greece but internationally too.

Today the ships will leave port and take part in the grand Parade of Sail before heading to Skiathos where a line will be set for tomorrow’ early morning start.

The leading ship in the Parade of Sail, which will take place on a course set just off the waterfront in Volos at 1600, will be the Polish Ship, Dar Mlodziezy, while the Russian Ship Mir will take the rear of the fleet.

The wind forecast is showing light and variable, just 5kts from a south-easterly direction, which means a slow start is expected.

Last night’ activities in the port included a ‘stage’ show aboard the Indonesian Ship Dewaruci which once again attracted 100s of visitors. A fine display of Indonesian dance, with crew dressed in traditional costume entertained the visitors all evening, while guests on board were treated to Indonesian cuisine prepared the ship’ chef and a chance to meet Ahmad Rusdi – The Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia (pictured right) – and the Navy Commander – Suharto La Djide.

The Afterguard party also took place last night, while other ship parties including the Turkish ship Bodrum entertained the crowds with traditional Turkish dance on this, the last night in Volos.
