Lifetime Achievement Award: Jacob Jan Dam

It was a great honour and a privilege to present this Lifetime Achievement Award during the Captains Dinner in Harlingen last night.

Today, we recognise a remarkable captain, entrepreneur, mentor and one of the pioneers of modern sail culture.

This person is an exceptional individual, whose influence extends far beyond the ships he has commanded and the voyages he has led.

His journey began on the inland lakes of the Netherlands and through a succession of vessels, ultimately led to the magnificent Thalassa. Along the way, he created opportunities for countless people through sail training, school voyages, special-interest expeditions and innovative programmes such as School at Sea.

What makes his contribution truly extraordinary is that he never saw himself simply as a ship owner. He saw himself as a steward. For more than fifty years, he invested not only in his ships, but in their future, ensuring that they would continue to serve generations of trainees, crew members and guests.

But his greatest legacy is found in people.

He devoted much of his life to helping young people grow, guiding them from deckhands to mates and from mates to captains. He had a remarkable ability to trust others with responsibility, creating an environment where confidence flourished, leadership emerged and lifelong careers were launched.
Many of the sailors who once stood on deck under his guidance now sail all over the world, carrying with them the skills, values and encouragement he shared.

Together with his wife, he also created a culture of inclusion and belonging. On board, everyone was welcome and for many crew members, trainees and guests; life aboard became far more than just a sailing experience – it became a place to find confidence, purpose, friendship and community.

When the time came to retire, he chose to ensure that the Thalassa would remain available for future generations. Thanks to that decision, sail training opportunities continue to thrive and countless young people and adults will continue to benefit from the experiences she provides.

His story is one of vision, generosity, leadership and service. His impact reaches far beyond the horizon and will continue to be felt for many more years to come.
