Former Tall Ships Races Race Director Awarded MBE
The long-time Race Director of The Tall Ships Races, Paul Bishop, was recognised in the New Years Honours list for his efforts to enhance the lives of young people through his work with Sail Training International…
He was made an MBE – Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire – as part of the annual awards presented in the UK.
Paul joined Sail Training International in 2006 and was responsible for more than 70 host port events as Race Director until 2020. Since then, he has worked on The Tall Ships Races 2022 and will be Race Director of The Tall Ships Races Magellan-Elcano this summer.
“I am delighted to be recognised in the New Year Honours for a career that I have had in Sail Training and Tall Ships Races over the past four decades.
“More importantly, it has highlighted Sail Training International, and its amazing work with the thousands of young people around the world who take up the adventure of a sail training voyage or Tall Ships Race each year.
“Although an individual award, it would not have been possible without having the privilege of working alongside so many inspirational people within the international Sail Training community and my thanks go out to them.
“The message that I would like to pass on today is that a voyage on a Tall Ship is available to any young person with a sense of adventure. A typical Sail Training voyage is made up of young people under the age of 25 of all backgrounds and abilities. Being at sea as a trainee teaches teamwork and is a fun, challenging and exhilarating adventure.
“Make 2023 the year that you will do something amazing and book on a sail training voyage today!”
Paul Bishop, MBE
Everyone at Sail Training International would like to warmly congratulate Paul on the award, which recognises all of his efforts over the years. Every year, The Tall Ships Races offer countless opportunities for young people to change their lives and, as Race Director, Paul has been an invaluable asset and contributor in helping us to provide these.
