Final Prize Giving in Lavrion – Shabab Oman wins Friendship Trophy

After a day of rain, the sun finally came out in time for the crew parade through the streets of Lavrion. Led by a brass band, the crews paraded along the front of the port and up to the Class A quayside and the stage. 

The Minister of Economy, Competitiveness and Mercantile Marine, Mrs Luca Katseli, thanked Sail Training International for organising such a great event and congratulated the crews on their achievement. She said she hoped that this would not be the last time a Tall Ships fleet visited Lavrion. 

Also on stage to award prizes were Dimitris Loucas, the Mayor of Lavrion, Paris Evangeliou, the Managing Director of Lavrion Port Authority, Gerassimos Arsenis, the ex Minister of Economy and Shipping, George Karavolos, Chairman of Sail Training Hellas and Captain Robin Snouck Hurgronje, Chairman of the Race Committee for the Historical Seas Tall Ships Regatta.

Prizes were awarded for the third race in the series from Istanbul to Lavrion as follows:

Class D on corrected time

1st – Adonis (Greece)

2nd – Akela (Russia)

3rd – Hansa (Spain)

Class C on corrected time

1st – Mythos (Greece

2nd – Mati (Croatia)

Class B on corrected time

1st – Bodrum (Turkey)

2nd – Tecla (Netherlands)

3rd – Maybe (UK

Class A on corrected time

1st – Dar Mlodziezy (Poland)

2nd – Mir (Russia)

3rd – Kaliakra (Bulgaria)

Additional prizes for Race 3:

First ship across the finish line (line honours) – Hansa (Spain)

1st overall on corrected time – Dar Mlodziezy (Poland)

Communications prize – Tenacious (UK)

Cook Longest at Sea – Janette Sluik (Tecla – Netherlands)

Hans Reith Memorial Trophy for hardship and making supreme efforts to take part in the event – Ideefixe (France)

Best ship in the crew parade – Dewaruci (Indonesia)

Vessel with youngest average aged crew (27.25 yrs) – Kaliakra (Bulgaria)

Friendship Trophy

The final prize to be awarded was the coveted Sail Training International Friendship Trophy, awarded to the ship which, in the opinion of the captains and crews of all the ships taking part in the Historical Seas Tall Ships Regatta 2010 series, has done most to promote international friendship and understanding. After a dramatic pause, the Race Director finally announced that the winner of this Trophy was Omani ship Shabab Oman.
