Esbjerg, Denmark: final port party preparations

August 1, 2014

Over half the international fleet of The Tall Ships Races 2014 are in the harbour, flags are flying, visitors have already started arriving and the port is making its final preparations for the official start of the event on Saturday 2 August.

There is a lot to look forward to over the coming days (Saturday 2 – Tuesday 5 August):

  • Crews can start enjoying sport activities from today (Friday 1 August) with a beach volleyball competition starting at 1600, on a specially made sand ‘beach’
  • Over the coming days crews will also have the opportunity to take part in rowing, paddle boarding, tug of war, football, hockey, petanque and cross fit training with a sailors theme – plus running and walking tours.
  • Visitors will enjoy a packed programme with music over four stages, street entertainment and fireworks.  Plus, a crew parade through the streets and the final awards prize giving in the town square.
  • Corporate hospitality receptions and day sails have been booked so that guests and visitors can enjoy the experience of being on a Tall Ship, in addition to having the opportunity to visit the vessels while they are in harbour.

The Tall Ships Races 2014 started this year in Harlingen, The Netherlands and raced to Fredrikstad, Norway before cruising in company to Bergen, Norway and then racing to Esbjerg, Denmark.  Each port has brought a distinct and special character to the event and around 500,000 visitors are expected to visit Esbjerg – the final port.
