Countdown to fun in the sun

August 15, 2013

The Lycamobile Mediterranean Tall Ships Regatta is in sight.

Now that the Tall Ships Races 2013 in the Baltic are complete, vessels and crews are looking forward to the challenge of the Lycamobile Mediterranean Tall Ships Regatta to mark the end of the summer season.

Barcelona, Spain (21-24 September), Toulon, France (27 – 30 September) and La Spezia (Italy) 4-7 October are busy preparing for the arrival of the fleet.

“The excitement is tangible” said Mike Bowles, Race Director. “Sailing in the Mediterranean at this time of year is a dream that many trainees are about to fulfil.”

To-date some 37 vessels have signed up for the event, including twelve spectacular Class A ships, some of the finest Tall Ships in the world.

There is no upper age limit (min age 15 years) for the trainees taking part in the races, who will enjoy amazing scenery, hopefully fast sailing and lots of festivities in the host ports. Anyone and everyone can do it – no previous experience is needed.  If you would like to give it a try, visit the Sail Training International website.

äóìWe are counting down the days until the beginning of the Regatta. It promises to be a spectacular event with much to do and see in each port, for trainees as well as visitors,” said Chairman of the Regatta, M.Christian Bickert.

What is sail training?

Sail Training is an adventure activity, which includes far more than sailing instruction. Participants are required to confront demanding challenges, both physical and emotional. It is an activity that inspires self-confidence and personal responsibility. It promotes an acceptance of others, whatever their social or cultural backgrounds, and develops a willingness to take controlled risks. Those who undertake Sail Training on Tall Ships generally find it a positive life-changing experience.
