Canada Legacy Fund & Youth Development Fund 2024 Launched
Sail Training International is delighted to announce the launch of the Youth Development Fund 2024 and the Canada Legacy Fund 2024…
Both funds were created to support a range of projects with the Canada Legacy Fund providing $25,000(CAN) and the Youth Development Fund offering a total of £25,000 towards different programmes to support a number of projects fostering youth development and sail training.
The Sail Training International Canada Legacy Fund supports organisations (preferably non-profit) to help deliver youth sail training programmes to young Canadians. Sail Training International has set aside a total fund of $25,000CAN to be awarded in grants to successful applicants.
Following the success of the Rendez-Vous 2017 Tall Ships Regatta, the Canada Legacy Fund was been set up with generous support from Rendez-Vous Naval de Quebec. The Canadian Legacy Fund is under the management of the Sail Training International Board of Trustees, and is administered by the designated Legacy Fund Committee. The Canada Legacy fund offers support to organisations that provide sail training programmes that look to reach disadvantaged young Canadians aged between 14-25 years. These programmes will offer one or more of the following:
- Improve trainees personal, social and/or educational development
- Enhance international friendship and understanding
- Demonstrate replicable models of innovation and good practice in sail training
Interested in applying, but Unsure if Your Project Meets the Funding Criteria?
New for 2024, we will be offering organisations the opportunity to complete an Expression of Interest (EOI) initial application for the Youth Development and Canada Legacy Funds. To submit an EOI, all you need to do is complete the form which will provide a summary of your proposed project which will then be reviewed by the funding committee.
Once you submit an EOI, the Funding Committee will advise if the proposed project meets the funding criteria and provide support where needed when completing your full application.
This is a great option if you are unsure if your project meets the funding criteria or if you want feedback on a project before completing the full application form.

THE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT FUND
The Youth Development Fund is aimed at the development of more effective sail training programmes for young people from disadvantaged social backgrounds. It was launched in 2019, and since then it has helped 16 organisations deliver some amazing sail training projects.
The fund supports organisations – preferably nonprofit – that deliver sail training programmes reaching young people from diverse backgrounds, particularly those from a disadvantaged background and offers one or more of the following areas of development:
- Improve trainees’ personal, social, or educational development
- Enhance international friendship and understanding
- Demonstrate replicable models of innovation and good practice in sail training
In addition to this, the funded projects should achieve one or more of the following:
- Increase the number of young people participating in sail training, particularly those who enjoy fewer opportunities
- Encourage a structured approach to the management and outcomes of sail training programmes
- Encourage effective partnerships between sail training operators and other agencies/partners/organisations working with young people over the long term and provide credible evidence of how far the stated outcomes have been achieved
Applications are accepted from National Sail Training Organisations, sail training operators, land based agencies/organisations or individuals working with young people and schools.
Applicants are likely to be non-profit bodies working for public benefit and exempt from tax. We will also consider exceptional proposals from commercial companies meeting the above criteria.
THE CANADA LEGACY FUND
Following the success of the Rendez-Vous 2017 Tall Ships Regatta, the Canada Legacy Fund was set up with generous support from Rendez-Vous Naval de Quebec. The fund supports organisations that provide sail training programmes focused on helping disadvantaged young Canadians aged between 14-25 years. These programmes will offer one or more of the following:
- Improve trainees personal, social and/or educational development
- Enhance international friendship and understanding
- Demonstrate replicable models of innovation and good practice in sail training
We encourage and welcome applications from organisations from around the world to apply for the Canada Legacy Fund if they are delivering a project that helps disadvantaged young Canadians.
The Canada Legacy Fund Committee is made up of two Sail Training International Trustees, one representative of Rendez-Vous Naval de Quebec and advised by a representative of Tall Ships Canada Association.
