Twenty trainees aged 22 – 60 years old all made the claim to fame this weekend of being the largest Turkish crew to sail a square rigger. Amongst them was the grandson of the last fleet commander of the Ottoman Navy, Liva Amiral Arif Pasha.
The crew (11 ladies and nine men) were the delivery crew on board Class A Tall Ship, Christian Radich (Norway) sailing her in from DelfSail in the Netherlands to Antwerp for the start of The Tall Ships Races 2016.
The crew had successfully sailed her 435 nautical miles and every one of them took part in the full sail training programme and watch system on board from oiling the rigging, cleaning, climbing the masts to fix sails, keeping watching and cooking in the galley. The permanent crew on board praised their efforts of working efficiently and achieving everything they were asked to do.
