What Makes You Smile on International Day of Happiness 2019?

Posted on: 20.03.17

In case you’d missed it, today (20 March) is International Day of Happiness 2019. In our opinion, it’s the perfect opportunity to think about what makes you (and those around you) feel good. If in doubt, check out #InternationalDayOfHappiness and #happyday on social media – it’s guaranteed to make you smile!

Take a few minutes to think about what makes you happiest. Perhaps you love dancing to your favourite music like nobody’s watching? Maybe you enjoy doing something kind for someone in need? Or, possibly, the thought of setting sail on board an impressive Tall Ship, flanked by playful dolphins and soaring sea birds, with a loyal group of new friends by your side, makes your heart sing?

Well, today is all about reflecting on those things and doing what you can to make others smile, too.

What Is International Day of Happiness?

Since, 2013, the United Nations has promoted and celebrated International Day of Happiness. Its goal is to “recognise the importance of happiness in the lives of people around the world.”

Of course, millions of people across the globe live through challenging situations every day and may not be able to smile today. So, in 2015, the UN launched their “17 Sustainable Development Goals.” Their incredible and ambitious aim is to end poverty, reduce inequality, and protect our planet. The UN reports that these three elements lead to well-being and happiness. So, we think everyone should get on board and work toward achieving them!

International Day of Happiness and the Tall Ships Races and Regattas

Thousands of young people (and those young at heart) take part in the Tall Ships Races and Regattas every year. And, millions of spectators come to soak up the fun and friendly atmosphere. In fact, our events have even become Europe’s largest free, family festival.

Lots of you tell us that you love participating and have an amazing time… which makes us very happy! After all, we work really hard all year round to make sure that our events are fun-filled, adventurous voyages full of self-discovery, teamwork, acceptance, diversity, and international friendship.

We asked members of our Facebook Group, “What makes you happy on board a Tall Ship?” You commented and messaged us with some fantastic suggestions. Let’s take a look at some of our favourites.

What Makes You Happy?

“Being able to embrace the vastness of the ocean without a worry in the world – for me, that’s the happiest thing. There’s so much to explore and see, but in that moment all is calm.”

Luke Robinson.

“Cleaning the heads during Happy Hour. There is nothing more pleasing than teaching young adults how to clean the toilets. It’s a transferable life skill.”

Wing Chan.

International Day of Happiness Water Fight

“It’s all about challenging yourself in a completely different environment to everyday life. There are so many challenges, ranging from seasickness… to stowing sails in a gale. The self-satisfaction of overcoming some challenges and succeeding in others, and then being able to teach others to do the same… made sure it was the happiest of times.”

Simon Gill.

“Catching up with the best bunch of friends anyone could imagine having (and more). All while creating magic for the next generation of sail trainers. You’re surrounded by the deep blue and the feeling of freedom and yet insignificance that comes with being immersed in something as dominant, huge and yet nurturing as the ocean blue. Knowing that the only way to work with Mother Nature is to respect what she is capable of, and that you’ve all got to merge to become one to get your nautical home through one massive unpredictable adventure.”

Laura Lyth.

“Everything about being on board and being at sea.”

Lee Hayward.

“Just the vastness of the ocean and the sky. It gives me inner peace!”

Eva Fuchs.
