News from the cruise: building up to Bergen

There are just a couple of more days left of The Tall Ships Races 2014 cruise-in-company before the fleet sail into Bergen, Norway – the third port of The Tall Ships Races 2014. A cluster of the 2014 Tall Ships fleet is now focused on the cruise in company port of Leirvuk where crews can ski in perpetual snow, swim in the sea, fish for trout in the rivers and for pollack in the sea, all in one day.
The port boasts beautiful scenery and exciting history; and local sports grounds offer multi-purpose sports facilities with football pitches, handball courts, athletics track, racket sports facilities, climbing wall and beach volleyball court.
About Bergen
Bergen was a Tall Ships Races host port in 1993, 2001 and 2008 and the 2008 event still stands as the most attractive event ever in Bergen with an estimated “ll time highäó of 500,000 visitors over four days.
2014 is a special year for Norway as it celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Norwegian Constitution, and maritime Norway celebrates the 100th birthday of its much loved sail training ship, Statsraad Lehmkuhl.
Haakon Vatle, Bergen’ project manager said, äóìMaritime traditions combined with modern music and culture is the emphasis of our port programme 24-27 July. The main theme of the event is tradition and renewal. We want to bring Tall Ship Races together with culture to strengthen the interest of the young people of today and the future. And we want to challenge old stereotypes about sailing and show how interesting it can be for the younger generations.
