Fleet preparing to converge on Barcelona

September 17, 2013

Final preparations are underway ahead of the arrival of the Sail Training fleet in Barcelona from Saturday 21st September ready to celebrate the start of the Lycamobile Mediterranean Tall Ships Regatta 2013. Thirty ships of various shapes and sizes will be converging on Barcelona for the four day festival before the start of the first race, to Toulon, France.

Some of the largest and most iconic tall ships in the world will be on show, with trainees from all over the world taking part. Spectators will enjoy the Parade of Sail when the fleet depart Barcelona on Tuesday.

äóìThis is the third time that Barcelona will host these ambassadors of the cultural values of the sea. Our relationship with the Mediterranean Tall Ships Regatta is consolidated as we share the same spirit of training, improvement, solidarity and respect for the environment that are the great lessons from traditional sailing. We have always added values and we have the greatest pleasure in sharing them with the citizens of Barcelona” said Andor Serra, general director of the Fundacií_ Navegacií_ Oceíænica Barcelona (FNOB).

What is sail training?

Sail Training is an adventure activity, which includes far more than sailing instruction. Participants are required to confront demanding challenges, both physical and emotional. It is an activity that inspires self-confidence and personal responsibility. It promotes an acceptance of others, whatever their social or cultural backgrounds, and develops a willingness to take controlled risks. Those who undertake Sail Training on Tall Ships generally find it a positive life-changing experience.
