Rain doesnt stop play in the crew parade!
It was the Tall Ship fleet’s turn to entertain the city today, when they made their way through the streets in the traditional Crew Parade. Two thousand trainees snaked their way from the Market Square to the main stage on the quayside dancing, singing, playing drums, pipes and trombones. A heavy rain shower could not dampen their spirits and when the sun came back out there were huge cheers from the crowd.
Prizes were presented on behalf of the City of Kristiansand by the Culture Minister, Anniken Huitfeldt, and Mayor Per Sigurd Sorensen. The following prizes were awarded:
Beach Volley competition – Dewaruci (Indonesia)
Basketball competition – Lietuva (Lithuania)
Tug of War competition – Dar Mlodziezy (Poland)
Hill running competition – Mir (Russia)
Javelin competition – Pelican of London (UK)
Table tennis competition – Dewaruci (Indonesia)
Archery competition – Constantia (Sweden)
Canoeing competition – Spaniel (Latvia)
Soda case piling competition – Dewaruci (Indonesia)
Most spectacular arrival in port – Dewaruci (Indonesia)
Best dressed ship in port – Christian Radich (Norway)
The Tall Ships Races 2010 special prizes from Sail Training International presented by Race Chairman Knut Western were awarded as follows:
Best crew in the crew parade – Pelican of London (UK)
Youngest crew – Georg Stage (Denmark)
Most international crew – Mir (Russia)
Special award ‘For outstanding contribution to the Cruise-in-Company – Christian Radich (Norway) Special award ‘To the ship that has shown exceptional ‘sail
training spirit’of one of the principle aims of inclusion by taking a
special crew of mixed abilities -Astrid (Netherlands)
This evening the trainees will be celebrating at the Crew Beach Party at Bendiksbukta, Odderoya before some sadly leave tomorrow (Saturday) and new trainees arrive to prepare for the next leg of the race.
