Adventure Challenge for Danish School
Ten youngsters from the Sígardhus School in Abenra, Denmark, are about to embark on an adventurous couple of weeks starting with the race to Sicily on board Den Store Bjírn. The two girls and eight boys have just joined the ship in Genoa as part of their school’s outward bound programme that helps to offer the youngsters experiences outside of the classroom.
The youngsters will not only be learning about sailing their vessel in the race to Trapani, but will also have lessons on board ship. After the Garibaldi Tall Ships Regatta has finished the ship will return to Sardinia where the youngsters will enjoy diving amongst other activities.
Andreas Laarsen was one of the few that had sailed on Den Store Bjírn before and was looking forward to the race, which he said they were definitely going to try and win. “It is the first time we have been in Italy so we are looking forward to seeing around and enjoying the sights,” said Andreas.
Den Store Bjírn, which means The Great Bear, is a 49m three masted schooner and although she has not competed recently in any Sail Training International events, she has been successfully competing in races within the Baltic. The Class B vessel sails with ten trainees and seven crew members on board, including several teachers.
