Preparations Begin for the first Race of the Tall Ships Races 2018

Posted on: 13.07.18

On the third day of the The Tall Ships Races 2018, Captains and crews began preparing for Race 1 from Sunderland, UK, to Esbjerg, Denmark…

Held in the Civic Offices, the Captain’s Briefing provided details of the race conditions to come. All the information provided will be crucial for the Captains as they plan their race tactics. Race 1 is due to start at 18:00, approximately 5 miles east of Sunderland in the North Sea. Once at sea, the fleet will race around two way points and across to Esbjerg, Denmark.

WEATHER REPORT

As the fleet makes its way across the race start line, the weather conditions will make for a challenging start. Light winds and calm seas will see the Tall Ships battle to find wind to fill their sails and success in the race will be down to the tactical decisions made by the Captains and crews.

For the new crew members and trainees, this will provide an opportunity for trainees to get to grips with their new environments on these majestic Tall Ships and build long lasting relationships with their new crew mates and memories that a sure to last a lifetime.

Sail Training International Race Director, Ben Stuart, provided an insight to how the race may go.

“We expect to see a slow race to Denmark with high pressure accompanying the fleet across the North Sea. With winds being so light, the race Committee will be keeping a close eye to ensure arrival in Esbjerg on time. It is envisaged to be a technical race as the fleet look to make the most of these sailing conditions.”Sail Training International Race Director, Ben Stuart
