Race One of the Tall Ships Races 2018 has seen a captivating battle for supremacy across the fleet as vessels from all classes made excellent progress towards the finish line and Esbjerg…
Sail Training International Race Director, Paul Bishop, has been providing updates on the day’s frantic action over on our Facebook Page, and gave the following analysis of the action.
“Helena (Finland) has continued to extend her lead to seven miles ahead of Mir (Russia) and has benefitted from slightly more wind pressure to the east. She might well have consolidated the lead that she gained this afternoon to take Line Honours.
“Mir remains in first place on Corrected Time (CT) in Class A with Sorlandet (Norway) closely behind with less than 20 minutes separating them. Fryderyk Chopin (Poland) looks set to take third place on CT in Class A.
“Stina Mari (Norway) has extended her lead on CT in Class B with Jolie Brise (UK) in second place and Wyvern (Norway) in third just seconds behind.
“Hosanna (France) remains in first place on CT in Class C/D with Black Diamond of Durham (UK) in second and Tuulelind (Estonia) in third.
“The forecast is for the wind to be very light and swing around 360 degrees over the next 24 hours, which will be particularly challenging to the captains, navigators and all on board. Thereafter, it is due to fill in from the west and strengthen which should provide the crews with a final exhilarating sail up towards the finish line. The Race Committee is not currently considering bringing the Time Limit forward at this time from 23:00 UTC tomorrow (17 July) in view of the improving forecast. The decision will of course be kept under review ”
