SCF Black Sea Tall Ships Regatta 2016: Race Report 3. Fleet Split into Three Groups

September 13, 2016

Light to moderate winds in an unhelpful direction have created an interesting split in the fleet, as it continues to make its way towards Novorossiysk.

Akela (Russia) continues to make good progress and now has a commanding lead on the water as she excels in the light to moderate headwinds. The rest of the fleet has split into two distinct strategic groups. The southerly cluster is headed by Mir (Russia), still followed closely by Nadezhda (Russia), which has done well in the initial stages of the race. The more northerly group is beginning to catch up as the winds are becoming stronger and generally more favourable in this area. The more northerly strategy could begin to benefit Adornate (Romania), Kaliakra (Bulgaria) and Royal Helena (Bulgaria).
