SCF Black Sea Tall Ships Regatta is on top of the world

October 30, 2013

The flag of the SCF Black Sea Tall Ships Regatta 2014 reached the North Pole earlier this month.

The flag was shipped 5,000 km to the furthest north of the planet on board NS 50 Years of Victory (Let Pobedy) – a Russian Arktika-class nuclear-powered icebreaker – from the Russian city of Murmansk.

The original goal of the expedition, headed by Russian polar explorer Artur Chilingarov, was to bring the Olympic torch relay to the North Pole as part of its Russia tour, organised by Rosatom, a Russian nuclear energy state corporation, and Sochi Olympic Committee.

It took over 91 hours for NS 50 Years of Victory to reach the North Pole, cruising in polar night temperatures reaching äóî20_C. When NS 50 Year of Victory reached the location – 90’N – the Captain, Valentin Davydyanz, stepped on the ice and lit the Olympic fire at the North Pole mark.

After that two famous Russian world travellers, Valery Vasilevsky and Victor Boyarsky, took the SCF Black Sea Tall Ships Regatta flag to the North Pole point and were photographed with the flag in front of the mark.

Valery Vasilevsky is commissioned by Sochi Marine Club to be the official photographer of SCF Black Sea Tall Ships Regatta 2014. Valery has been working with Tall Ships since 2006 and recently completed a two-year world cruise on board STS Sedov.

Victor Boyarsky, director of the Russian museum of Arctic and Antarctic, is famous for completing a seven month, transantarctic ski journey in 1989-90.

äóìWe were very happy to bring the flag of such a notable Regatta to the North Poleäó, said Valery Vasilevsky.

“The SCF Black Sea Regatta in May 2014, organised by Sail Training International and sponsored by Sovcomflot, will put the Black Sea on the map for the world’ most notable Tall Ships.äó

Editor’ notes:

What is sail training?

Sail Training is an adventure activity, which includes far more than sailing instruction. Participants are required to confront demanding challenges, both physical and emotional. It is an activity that inspires self-confidence and personal responsibility. It promotes an acceptance of others, whatever their social or cultural backgrounds, and develops a willingness to take controlled risks. Those who undertake Sail Training on Tall Ships generally find it a positive life-changing experience.

About Sail Training International (STI)

STI is the international voice of Sail Training, a registered charity (not-for-profit organisation), which has worldwide membership and activities.
