Race Two, Report One

September 30, 2013

Strong westerly winds made for a challenging start for Race Two – 25k and gusting 35k with a heavy swell of 2 or 3 metres.  Due to the conditions only two ships crossed the line in full sail Mir and Akela (both Russia).  Mir, – pictured – in particular, made a very impressive start, timing her run from approximately five miles from the start line to perfection.

First across the line in each class were as follows:

Class A:  Alexander von Humboldt II (Germany)

Class B:  Bodrum (Turkey)

Class C: Femme Fatale (Hungary)

Class D: Thais (France)

During the night the wind is expected to reduce and the forecast over the next 24 hours is that the wind will become easterly, making for an interesting and tough race.

“We wish the fleet well on their race and look forward to seeing them in La Spezia” said Chris Bickert, Chairman of the Race Committee.

It is an activity that inspires self-confidence and personal responsibility. It promotes an acceptance of others, whatever their social or cultural backgrounds, and develops a willingness to take controlled risks. Those who undertake Sail Training on Tall Ships generally find it a positive life-changing experience.
