High school students begin school year onboard Far Barcelona
äó¢ The 24 students from two schools in Barcelona will soon board the schooner Far Barcelona from El Consorci El Far to participate as trainees during the race.
äó¢ The Consorci El Far celebrates its 20th anniversary during the Festival of La Mercí (patron saint of Barcelona) and the Mediterranean Tall Ships Regatta.
äó¢ From September 21st to the 24th, the public will be able meet the schooner Far Barcelona (1874), one of the oldest boats competing in the race.
On September 20th, 2013 students of 10th Grade from the Institute Enric Borras of Badalona and 11th Grade from the Instituto Luis Vives of Barcelona start the new school year embarking on September 24th and 29th respectively onboard the schooner of the Consorci El Far, Far Barcelona.
The organization, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary, is again present in a Tall Ships regatta, this time the Lycamobile Mediterranean Tall Ships Regatta. On this occasion, however, it does so with two educational centers which have been involved for years in the educational program Grumet Exit. This program works with youngsters from Barcelona high schools in which, using the ship as floating classroom, they learn concepts from the school’ curriculum applied in real-world context which are integrated in the daily tasks and life on board.
As for the participating schools, both highlight the great opportunity for the boys and girls taking part in this event. The students who will sail will act as “ambassadors” of the city in the other ports where the race stops: Toulon and La Spezia. In Barcelona, the congregation of these tall ships happens at the same time as the festival of La MercíÂ, and has been organized by the Fundacií_ Navegacií_ Oceíænica Barcelona (FNOB) and the Consorci El Far.
Consorci El Far, 20 years approaching the culture of the sea
The Consorci El Far celebrates its 20th anniversary by spreading the role the organization has about promoting the culture of the sea in the city of Barcelona. In this sense, from September 21st to the 23rd the public will be able to visit the schooner Far Barcelona during the days the Lycamobile Mediterranean Tall Ships Regatta will be in Barcelona, and view the commemorative video that has been prepared for the occasion. This video allows us to learn the culture of the sea in Barcelona through the history of the institution.
Among the projects presented in the video there is from the participation in the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992 with the construction of the Icaria rowboat that carried the Olympic torch to the port of Empurias (and currently at the Olympic Museum in Barcelona), to the educational programs related to the values äóäóof the culture of the sea and the sailing world. Also about the promotion of nautical projects as the Barcelona World Race or the Mediterranean Tall Ships Regatta.
The Consorci El Far wanted to make the most of this event as the starting point for different activities that will take place in the coming months and that will look at the major projects undertaken by the organization in the past 20 years, establishing new links between the city of Barcelona and the sea.
