Race report 17: Tight racing and a close match

July 30, 2013

The west of course strategy has benefitted several vessels with Helena (Finland) taking the closest course to Gotland and coming out ahead on the water with around 150 miles to go to the finish line. There is tight racing out in front in Class A with Statsraad Lehmkuhl (Norway) just keeping ahead of Christian Radich (Norway) and Fryderick Chopin (Poland). This is likely to be a close match all the way.

Many of the Class C yachts are grouped together at the front making exciting racing in this fleet too and in Class D, Lietuva (Lithuania) is on Tomidi’ (Belgium) stern chasing her hard.

The wind is forecast to back to the SW for a short time which might benefit those vessels to the left of the course, but the weather conditions at the moment make it hard to predict leaving the navigators with another challenging  night ahead.

The current placings are:

Class A

1st   Statsraad Lehmkuhl (Norway)

2nd  Tre Kronor af Stockholm (Sweden)

3rd Christian Radich (Norway)

Class B

1st Johanna Lucretia (UK)

3rd Wyvern av Aalesund (Norway)

Editor’ notes:

What is sail training?

Sail Training is an adventure activity, which includes far more than sailing instruction. Participants are required to confront demanding challenges, both physical and emotional. It is an activity that inspires self-confidence and personal responsibility. It promotes an acceptance of others, whatever their social or cultural backgrounds, and develops a willingness to take controlled risks. Those who undertake Sail Training on Tall Ships generally find it a positive life-changing experience.
