Stephanie Chung from Budmouth Technology College in Weymouth has recently been presented with the Sail Training International äóìTorbay Cupäó and her certificate by Captain Paul Compton in a special assembly held at her college.

Stephanie a trainee from the British Class A sailing vessel, TS Pelican of London, won the international award for outstanding individual achievement and personal effort during The Tall Ships Races 2010 race series.  This award was coveted by all the 120 ships that participated and 6,662 trainees.

The 15-year-old (the youngest ever winner of the award) was part of the crew on board the Pelican for the Antwerp to Aalborg leg of the 2010 races and beat hundreds of other nominees to be awarded the prestigious Torbay Cup.

Head of Year 11 at Budmouth College, Nicky Higgins said: äóìWe’re absolutely proud of Stephanie, it’ been such an amazing opportunity for her it’ allowed her to blossom.

äóìShe’ such a lovely girl, I’ve known her since Year 7, and this has made her much more confident.

äóìThis cup was international and she was the best trainee, it’ amazing.äó

Second officer Ben Swain onboard Pelican, said: äóìStephanie was presented with her cup at an assembly at Budmouth.  He added: äóìShe showed the most effort onboard during her leg and shone for someone of her age. We put her name forward after she took part on one particular leg of the races, then an international panel of judges decided which trainee deserved it.

äóìIt’ a great credit to the effort she put in on board and from our side, it’ a reflection of the standard of sail training conducted on Pelican – it’ the first British Class A ship to ever win it.äó

Stephanie was among 21 Weymouth borough teenagers who raced onboard TS Pelican as part of The Tall Ships Races 2010.  The TS Pelican has signed up for The Tall Ships Races 2011, presented by Szczecin, organised by Sail Training International.

The Pelican’ Ship’ Director and Master , Darren Naggs said äóìWe hope to continue the Pelican success story in 2011. The ship established herself as an active, popular vessel within the Sail Training International fleet last season, äóì I look forward to welcoming young people from all over  Europe and invite them to come enjoy the atmosphere onboard.äó
