Race Two gets underway
Race Two of The Tall Ships Race got under way as scheduled this afternoon, with Stavros S Niarchos (UK) first over the line, followed by Shabab Oman (Oman) with Eendracht (Netherlands) and Tenacious (UK) in joint third.
First across the line in Class B was Jolie Brise (UK) followed by Wyvern (Norway) and Rupel (Belgium).
In Class C Neva (Russia) crossed first, followed by Thermopylae Clipper (UK) and John Laing (UK).
Hansa (Spain) crossed the line first in Class D, followed by Endorfina (Poland) and Zryw (Poland).
With the wind coming from an unfavourable direction the captains and navigators have needed to make strategic decisions with one group heading south and the other tacking up the Norwegian coast with Tomidi (Belgium) the early leader on the water.
Earlier in the day a huge flotilla accompanied the fleet on the Parade of Sail (pic), led by local ship Sorlandet. Undocking had started at 10:00hrs with the ships gathering in holding areas off the island of Odderoya prior to forming the parade. Thousands of local people watched, perched on cliffs and rocks on the surrounding mainland and islands.
The first position report update will be undertaken at 06:00 UTC/GMT on 2 August. Once the full communications schedule has been completed the position update reports will be operational.
