Prizegiving – Race 1
Anton Novak Square in the heart of Varna was the spectacular venue for this afternoon’ prizegiving for Race 1 of the Historical Seas Tall Ships Regatta from Volos, Greece.
Thousands of spectators crowded round the stage set in Primorski Park to watch the ceremony take place.
Local dignitaries, including Kiril Yordanov – the Mayor of Varna, Dancho Simeonov – the District Governor, Nikolai Apostolov – Chairman of the City Council of Varna, presented the prizes.
The Mayor, Mr Yordanov, commenting in his opening speech, said: äóìIt’ our honour and our pleasure to welcome the tall ships and their young crews to our city and bring together so many different cultures.äó
The overall winner on corrected time was Tecla, Netherlands (Class B). Other class winners included Mir, Russia (Class A), Mythos, Greece (Class C) and Akela, Russia (Class D). The prize for the first vessel across the finish line was Hansa, Spain (Class D).
Among the special prizes presented was one for the ship with the youngest average aged crew (23 years old), which was won by Mati, Croatia (Class C).
