Guiseppe Garibaldi’s great grand-daughter visits fleet
The great grand-daughter of Guiseppe Garibaldi, Anita Garibaldi, came to visit the Tall Ships in Genoa today and remarked at how pleased she was that there was an event to mark her great grand-father’s passion for sailing.
Anita Garibaldi, together with her son Francesco and grandson Guiseppe, strolled around the event village and visited Oosterschelde from the Netherlands and the Italian navy ship Palinuro, amongst others.
äóìI’m extremely flattered at the welcome I have received from the city of Genoa and I’m also very happy for that for the first time Guiseppe Garibaldi has been recognised as a seaman, as this was his real origin and his real passion. To date there has never been a recognition of my ancestor’ love of the sea with no monument In the world depicting him as a sailor,äó commented Anita Garibaldi.
Later today the Garibaldi family will be present at the prize-giving to make an award of their own to one of the captains to mark this special event.
The Garibaldi family were joined by many hundreds of people along the quayside today as the warm weather brought visitors out to visit the ships. It is expected that the weekend will seen many more people come down to the Porto Antico to enjoy the spectacle.
