Its main focus is on issues related to ports and port facilities; laws and regulations concerning manning, environment, safety, labour and education.
He is a board member of Sail Training Association Netherlands (STAN) and a member of the Safety Council of European Maritime Heritage (EMH). EMH operates mainly as a network organisation for European advocacy groups for traditional ships in operation, but in some cases also as a representative organisation at a European level.

Together with his family he has lived and worked in Mozambique and Indonesia for five years, but his home base for over 25 years is Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
