Exhilarating Sailing and Close Fought Battles

August 15, 2012

The Class A ships and others that started yesterday have continued to make fast progress in the very strong south westerly winds that have provided them with some exhilarating sailing.

A further five vessels started today leaving the following vessels in port, or at anchor, waiting for the winds to moderate, which they are forecast to do over the next 24 hours or so:

Alba Explorer

Black Diamond

Creidne

Etoile Adventure

John Laing

Maybe

Prolific

Rona II

Thermopylae Clipper

Alexander Von Humbolt II (Germany )is beginning to close in on Cuauthemoc (Mexico) threatening to take her lead on the water which she has held since the start. With less than 10 miles between them, Cuauthemoc has responded by heading further west in the hope to cover her opponent. These modern-day ‘windjammers’ are now lined up to have a closely fought battle over the next 24 hours for dominancy at the head of the race fleet.

The current race positions on corrected time are:

Class A:

1st: Cuauhtemoc  (Mexico)

2nd: Stavross S Niarchos (UK)

3rd: Alexander Von Humboldt II (Germany)

Class B:

1st: Kapitan Borchard (Poland)

2nd: Johanna Lucretia (UK)

Class C:

1st: Spaniel (Latvia)

2nd: Antwerp Flyer (Belgium)

3rd: St Iv (Estonia)

Class D:

1st:Akela (Russia)

2nd: Tomidi (Belgium)
