Caribbean and Oman 2018 Bursaries

February 13, 2018

Sail Training International has launched two bursary funds to help support young people have a sail training adventure this year and to help vessels with their trainee recruitment.

Caribbean Bursary Fund 2019/19

This is only available to young Caribbean residents aged 15-25 years old and who live in the Caribbean region. They can apply for bursary funding up to €500 to sail on a Tall Ships’ sail training adventure during 2018 and 2019. Caribbean bursaries are match funded by Sail Training International up to a value of €500 for every applicant. Trainees with exceptional circumstances may be able to receive more funding.

Full information and the application form can be seen on our trainees Sail On Board website here.

The following Tall Ships have told us they are going to be in the Caribbean region from May 2018 to May 2019 and have spaces available for sail training voyages. All these vessels are Sail Training Blue Flag registered vessels, which means they have signed a pledge to adhere to a code of environmental best practice on board. What tall ships’ adventures are available?

Vessel Name Availability Blue Flag Registered
Blue Clipper (UK) Dec ’18 – May ’19 Yes
Lord Nelson (UK) May ’18 Yes
Oosterschelde (Netherlands) May ’18 Yes
Vahine (Finland) Dec ’18 – May ’19  Yes

If you are a sail training vessel which will be in the Caribbean region any time this year and next, you may also be eligible to be added to this list if you meet Sail Training International’s criteria. Email bursaries@sailtraininginternational.org for more information.

The final deadline for applications is 31 March 2019 – but the bursary will close when the funding has all been allocated, so applications are encouraged sooner rather than later! As soon as an application is received it will be assessed, on a case by case basis, and Sail Training International will let the applicant and vessel know if the application has been successful at the earliest opportunity.

Oman Bursary Scheme 2018

The Oman Bursary Scheme 2018 is open for applications for the seventh year running.

The scheme is aimed at anyone between 15-25 years old who is financially or physically disadvantaged – regardless of sailing experience, physical ability or nationality.

The purpose of the bursary is to allow people who are normally unable to go on a voyage, or take part in a Tall ships event, to be able to take part.

To ensure that we continue to encourage people from all over the world to have the opportunity to sail the bursary is limited to those who haven’t taken part in a Race or Regatta before and each successful applicant will be awarded a maximum of €500.

See a list of the Oman Bursary approved vessels and download a copy of the bursary criteria form here.

If you would like to be considered as an Oman Bursary approved vessel email bursaries@sailtraininginternational.org for more information.

Download the Oman Bursary trainee application form here (PDF) or here (Word). Once completed it needs to be saved and emailed to bursaries@sailtraininginternational.org.

There is no deadline date, but the bursary scheme will close once all funds have been allocated.
