Fleet finishes Leg 1, Race One

May 15, 2010

With the entire fleet having now completed the first leg of the first race they are now making their way under engine through the Sea of Marmara, towards the Black Sea where the second leg of this first race will begin.

The 46m barquentine, Derwaruci , Indonesia (Class A) was the final ship to cross the finish line at Ak Plaka Light off the north east coast of the Greek Island of Limnos at 0827 (GMT/UTC) this morning.

Information received at 1600 (GMT/UTC) reports the wind has increased to 30-35kts from the south which means the 17-strong fleet will endure a lively night at sea. The gaff schooner Aquarelle, France (Class B) made contact with race control to inform them she is remaining at anchor over night in an effort to gain some much-needed rest.

A once daily position report will be published on the website fleet tracking each morning as the fleet sails up to the start of the second leg of the race to Varna which begins on 18 May.
